CapturING IMAGES THAT CREATE NOSTALGIA

WHO AM I?

My name is Edith Smith, I’m a Fashion Communication student focused on photography and visual storytelling. My work combines image making and using real-life moments to explore identity, culture and everyday life. I’m interested in how imagery shapes perception, and how moving away from overly forced content can create something that feels more honest and relatable.

A lot of what I do is influenced by media and the way people interact with images, especially in a digital space. I like to challenge surface level social media content by creating work that feels more considered and intentional. Whether that’s through print, photography or design, I want to make work that people actually connect with rather than just scroll past.

Visually, I’m drawn to raw, unfiltered aesthetics. I like to work with 35mm film because it feels more real. I’m focused on capturing something authentic. I also have a lot of interest in editorial formats like magazines and photobooks, where image and layout work together to tell a story.

My approach is both creative and research led. I like to understand the theory and context behind what I’m making, especially around identity, representation and the gaze, but still keep the outcome feeling current and visually engaging.
